Gum disease is one of the most common — and most overlooked — dental problems, largely because its early stage often causes no pain at all. Catching it early makes treatment far simpler and keeps it from progressing to something more serious.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing
- Redness, swelling, or tenderness along the gumline
- Persistent bad breath that doesn't go away with brushing
- Gums that appear to be pulling away from the teeth
- Loose or shifting teeth
- Pain while chewing
What Causes Gum Disease
- Plaque buildup left along the gumline, which hardens into tartar
- Smoking or tobacco use
- Inconsistent brushing and flossing
- Diabetes and certain other health conditions
- Hormonal changes, including pregnancy
- Genetic predisposition
The Two Stages of Gum Disease
Gingivitis is the early, reversible stage — gums may be red, swollen, or bleed easily, but the underlying bone and tissue are still intact. Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, where the infection moves below the gumline, damaging the tissue and bone that hold teeth in place. Periodontitis can ultimately lead to tooth loss and is much harder to fully reverse.
Prevention Tips
- Brush twice daily and floss once a day, focusing on the gumline
- Use an antimicrobial mouthwash if recommended by your dentist
- Don't skip your six-month cleaning — it removes tartar brushing can't
- Quit smoking, which significantly raises the risk of gum disease
- Manage underlying conditions like diabetes with your physician
Treatment Options
Gingivitis often resolves with a professional cleaning and improved home care. More advanced periodontitis may require deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) to clean below the gumline, and in severe cases, gum surgery or bone grafting to repair the damage. The earlier it's caught, the simpler the treatment.
